Diving for Science
Many of the more exciting, intriguing dive sites
are found in waters that require advanced training. What about a
place with crystal clear water that stayed warm year round? How about
a place where you could see endangered species and discover relics
from ancient civilizations? What if this place was a short drive
from Austin? If this sounds interesting to you, then the Aquarena
Springs Diving for Science Program is just for you.
The Diving for Science program
offered through Aquarena Center puts a heavy emphasis on buoyancy
control. You
will dive in Aquarena's Spring Lake, one of the state's best and
most visible diving lakes - comparable to visibility in the Caribbean
Sea (it's at least 50-60 feet) and better yet, the water temperature
is 72 degrees year round.
The Diving for Science Program helps assure
that all diving operations in Spring Lake are procedurally safe
as well as environmentally sensitive. Once certified, divers
have limitless opportunities to participate in the Volunteer
Diving Program at Aquarena Center doing a variety of underwater
projects that promote lake health & upkeep
(e.g. underwater gardening) as well as diving without charge (make
sure you wave at the glass bottom tourist boats when they pass
overhead). The facility includes a heated changing room/shower
-- there isn't a better place in central Texas to dive during the
cooler winter months!
The Texas Rivers Center exhibit has recently opened on the ground floor of the prior Aquarena hotel. This is a perfect opportunity to expose new divers to the water systems, diving opportunities and the water sensitivity of Texas . Please visit the exhibit on your next trip to Aquarena Center.
